I almost burst into laughter at how fake Lily’s act was. Her lie was so obvious, yet neither of the men suspected her at all. But the two men didn’t doubt her words

They agreed immediately and took her to the car. I was left waiting with my best friend in the police station. Two hours later, they nally returned. Lily was still with them, a triumphant smile tugging at the corners of her lips, her eyes gleaming with delight There was no sign that she’d been caught or exposed, a bad premonition suddenly rose from the bottom of my heart, Before I could say anything, Jacob stormed over, throwing a stack of evidence photos from the police on the table in front of me. He angrily demanded, “Is this what you meant by Lily intentionally setting the fire? You’re talking nonsense! All I see are smoke
lains behind the bedroom door and a warped gas pipe in the kitchen!”
I widened my eyes in shock and grabbed the photos, studying them carefully.
Sure enough, everything was different from when I last saw the house. The evidence had been deliberately covered up.
I jumped to my feet, locking eyes with Jacob’s furious gaze and said sternly, “Someone went into the house before you took those
ictures! It didn’t look like this before!”
Jacob clearly didn’t expect me to stand my ground so firmly, even after seeing the evidence. His brows furrowed deeply and said, Lily only went in for less than a minute to grab something. What could a girl possibly do in that time? Are you going to keep accusing
ier without end? The evidence is right in front of you. What more do you want?”
I was seething with anger, ready to snap back. I pulled out my phone and showed them the photos I had taken earlier, displaying he timestamp that came with the factory settings of the phone.
They took my phone and examined the photos one by one Jacob’s face filled with doubt as he zoomed in on the photos, searching
neticulously for signs of editing.
Even now, he thought I was just smearing his precious Lily out of jealousy. He believed I was just being petty.
After a while, he finally confirmed that the photos were indeed unaltered, taken directly with the camera. His face darkened.
But I knew that these photos alone wouldn’t be enough to convict Lily. So I added, “There’s more. The surveillance footage from the
neighborhood, let’s check who left the house and how many of us there were
For the first time, panic flickered across Lily’s face. She was desperate but couldn’t come up with an excuse to stop them. She could only watch helplessly as they went to retrieve the surveillance footage.
This time, the process went much faster and they also brought back video footage from when my best friend had gone out to buy
groceries.
The video played on a large screen in front of everyone, showing my best friend leaving and returning with groceries in her hands. No matter how you looked at it, she was alone the entire time.
Lily’s repeated lies fell apart in an instant.
As the footage continued to play, Jacob’s frown deepened, his brows knitted so tightly that they could probably crush a bug. His lips were pressed into a thin line, his chest heaving, his breathing rapid. It was clear he was barely suppressing his rage. The self–righteous confidence he had shown when defending Lily earlier vanished completely
His eyes were fixed on the surveillance screen and he fell into silence.
Even now, Lily continued to act innocent, shaking her head at the two brothers, her voice pitiful as she tried to defend herself, “Maybe I misremembered. I thought they went out together. I was in the bathroom at the time, so I didn’t know… But later, when I came out, the house was quiet. I honestly thought I was alone. I didn’t think too much about it and when the fire started, I was just too scared to hear anything from inside the house.”
She still thought everyone else was an idiot. But now, with the surveillance footage exposing her lies and lives at stake, the trust
they once had in her crumbled.
Tears welled up in her eyes, making her look pitiful. It seemed like she wanted to get away with it like she had done countless
times before.
But this time, no one paid her any attention, no one spoke up for her.
Robin decisively reached over, and snatched the bag from her shoulder.
